When my mother died about four years ago the insurance said that I another person who we did not know had insured her, as we did not recognise the name or get to the bottom of it we just forgot all about it. But the other day the insurance company contacted me for me to send them certain details does this mean the pay-out could be made to me??

Contact the insurer to find out why they want your details. Nobody here knows the reason for the contact.

The thing about life insurance is that you only need to have a reason for the insurance when you buy it... so I lend you £20,000 I can, if I want, take a policy out on your life for circa £20,000. If you pay it back a month later its up to me if I cancel the insurance or let it run. As such people from your distance past potentially have policies that payout if you die within the policy term
Its not likely that a pay-out is going to be made to you and more likely they are wanting to ensure that your mother is actually the insured life and not a coincidental matching name & date of birth.1 -
