Chase Bank payment system - ***warning***

A couple of weeks ago I set up a payee on the Chase app to pay my credit card - basically a generic sort code / account number with the reference field being the long 16 digit card number. All went well and the payment went through and was allocated to the card
Yesterday I was about to make a second payment and was just about to sent it when I noticed (fortunately) that the 'reference' field was blank. If I had sent it, the money could not have been allocated to my card.
'Chatted' with Chase to ask what had happened and they basically said they were aware of the issue but no time scale to fix it.
Suggest checking the reference field is there when making payments if needed.

I hope you don't permanently lose your money.

And which drop the reference you used on the last occasion when making the new payment?Deleted_User said:
I'm not a customer of Chase Bank but I have a number of accounts with different banks which I use for making payments. Whenever I am ready to make a new payment I always check Sort Code, Account Number and Reference before submitting the new payment. I suggest others do likewise.cx6 said:

Never, in all my banking years have I ever known a bank to drop the last used reference on a saved payee. Until now, that isGeneral_Grant said:

What money has been lost? The OP spotted the reference field was blank before making the payment and so was able to make the payment for the correct card account.deadendwaterfall said:I hope you don't permanently lose your money.0 -
@cx6 - yes I've also noticed this and have also raised it with Chase - it makes it very difficult to pay money directly to a credit card account or to my mortgage account - as each time I've to type in the reference number which I might not have to hand. Having said that even if you had accidentally gone ahead and made the payment without using any reference - the money would have been returned to your account after a number of days.1

Starling, also do the same.cx6 said:

When going to pay the same payee again, the reference number is blank with a list of the previous ones used underneath. You can just click on the one required without having to retype it all again.1 -
I find it a lot more annoying when they force you enter a Reference, whether you want/need one or not. Starling and Santander insist on it. Still, 21st century issue.....0

My RBS payee list has also randomly dropped the reference of some often used payee, and reverted back to ask for authorisation if over £500. I wonder if there has been an update in standards for Fast Payment and some bank have had issue in changing their systems0
