I have a 12m run of old panel fencing which I want replaced with a top-notch, high (2m), sturdy, CONSTRUCTED fence. I need a really professional job done. Would people recommend that I approach fencing companies individually or put out a tendering situation on one of these job quote sites? I've never used these before and am wondering what to look out for.

  • You are probably best contacting fencing companies directly.
The checkatrade / my builder et al charge trades for putting them in contact with customers which is fine when there’s an oversupply of trades, not so great right now - Very few trades are having to seek out work at the moment.

Unfortunately this does show in terms and often experiences - big deposits, less than ideal work and lack of aftercare.

Good trades are out there but be prepared for a long slog to find them and do a lot of due diligence especially at the moment.

Going to local companies, or even better asking on a local Facebook group normally is best for anything work-wise, especially if someone is willing to back this up with photos.

The job sites charge just to send details through and in general lead to untrustworthy or desperate traders going to them.

  • As the other posts go to local traders & use recommendations from people you know. Plus facebook is a good idea.
  • OK, that seems to be unanimous!

As above, ring a few local companies. But make sure you give them all the same specification. For any new fence, I would strongly recommend concrete posts and gravel boards - These will last a lot longer than wooden posts (which tend to rot in 10 years or less). Done right, the posts will outlast you.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
