Barclay interest refund

Good afternoon, so I opened a later for my deceased Dad from Barclay saying he had a refund due to the interest on his old account. I am the executor and sole beneficiary, the letter states he is owed £222.47 (refund amount) and also £75 (inconvenience payment) and that once I reply with the account information I will receive them within 30 days. I replied with his death certificate and probate letter and short note explaining the circumstances and giving my account details for the payment. I have only received the inconvenience payment. Barclay have said because when my Dad had the account he was in financial difficulties and had to pay x amount of the debt and then it would be closed in arrears.Barclays are saying the £222.47 refund will not be given to me but has been put onto the outstanding amount to go towards paying the arrears. Surely the account should've been closed upon his death, which they were notified or if required then his estate would've paid the arrears at the time. I feel I should receive the full refund as stated in the letter. Do I have a leg to stand on with this? Or just admit defeat now? Many thanks

The account was closed on his death. But they're still allowed to offset it against unpaid debts.

You may feel you should get the refund, but you're not entitled to it.

Debts should be settled from the estate unless it is insolvent.

They are allowed to offset things like refunds against debt before they close it off

    My condolences on your loss
  • Thank you for replying both of you, appreciate that. The letter wasn't clear and made it sound like I would get the amount, now I understand what's happened I feel OK with that. Many thanks
  • Does anyone know if you can find out if your entitled to this if you didnt recieve a letter and if so, how?
  • You'd contact Barclays.

You're not entitled to it, per se, but rather if you were affected, you should be compensated - so just ring and ask.
