Standard Variable cheaper than any other offer British gas, Help

Hi I had this come few days ago and it shows that my currernt "deal" is ending end of this month, and it gives me options on what to do next, according to this if I do nothing and go on standerd variable I will be £90 more than currernly paying but if I pay but debit card which I do anyways it drops down to £10 less than I am paying now, But If I go for like for like its £256 more than I pay now. I always assumed if you did nothing and had standerd rates it would be more £££ than getting a "deal"

Can anyone advise me on what to do please and if this is right ect.

Thank you x

  • With all due respect where have you been for the last few months? There are so many threads on here about same/similar thing can’t believe you still think a new fixed contract should be cheaper than the standard variable.

    Hi  Whitebeast.
As Curiousgirl1 says, the way the energy market currently is, the cheapest option for almost everyone is to move onto the standard variable tariff once your current fixed-price deal finishes. In your case you could make a moderate saving by moving to DD payment rather than cash/cheque as you currently do.
There's a helpful article on the main MSE site here:
You can look for a new deal in the spring, when (hopefully) energy prices will have fallen a bit.

Surely you must have seen the news about energy companies dropping like flies and the comments about the significant rise in costs of gas and leccy.

Nearly all fixed are significantly more expensive  that the capped SVT, unless you are ever so lucky and find one that isn't. At the moment most people will find that the capped SVT will be the cheapest and will remain so until next April and beyond when the cap is revised (most likely upwards by a fair bit).

I'm afraid that no one is immune and anyone who's fixed price contract with one of the existing bigger suppliers is coming to an end will probably be better off rolling onto the SVT rather than plumping for another fixed deal and then hoping that the situation eases in the spring

My leccy bill has gone up by 70% due to the collapse of my supplier.
