Tiles

I ordered tiles from Cardiff Store  N and G Building Products Ltd on Friday 19th Nov 2021
Unfortunately these tiles  weren't available in store and I needed them for Wednesday 24 November 2021

The Sales Advisor was extremely helpful and managed to locate the tiles at another store .

Tiles  arrived Tuesday 23 November and were left to the side of my house, outside my garage and back gate.

Obviously they were too heavy  for me to move and I had to wait for  bathroom fitter to put them in safe place in  my garden on Thursday 25 Nov 2021.

It was then to my horror, I discovered the wrong tiles had been delivered and they were certainly not the ones I ordered .

On this discovery, I rang Cardiff Branch  asking for tiles  to be removed  .

I then had to try and source other tiles at  short notice as I knew tiler had been booked for Friday 26 Nov 2021

Again I couldn't fault the sales advisor who managed to find tiles in stock of a similar style but different colour .

These tiles  could be delivered  the next day Friday 26 November

There could be no time guarantee of their  arrival so I was forced to postpone the tiler who had been booked in advance

By doing this  I am having to pay him   £140 for a lost days work,  through no fault of my own.

I was also informed it was more than likely  the tiles I received from your other branch was a Discontinued Line

I am also seeking  for compensation for the fact I have to pay the tiler for a day lost to work and the fact that my bathroom fitters have also had their work schedule disrupted.
I would be grateful if you could take this matter up with the Store that supplied the original discontinued tiles

I  have  not had the bathroom I had planned

All in all a very distressing experience.

I sent this letter this was reply

The issue for you is the £140 which your tiler has charged you extra for his loss of work. To be blunt I would not have paid that personally as you agreed a rate for the bathroom to be tiled and as a self employed sub-contractor and although they would not like the situation they would be used to things going wrong and materials not to be there when needed especially in the current climate we find ourselves trading in.  That charge though is between you and your tiler and nothing to do with us so I am unable to directly refund you or compensate you for it sorry. We would always recommend having the tiles or bathroom equipment in your possession before making a firm booking with a tradesman to install to limit the risk of things like this happening.

Where do I stand and what can I do about it

Don’t leave it so late to order them next time round?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • They delivered the wrong item once and promptly sorted it out and got you what you wanted delivered the next day. I don't see how they are responsible for paying your tiler. Having the materials before booking tradesmen is generally a good idea.

I agree, you didn't leave any margin for errors as you had booked the tiler before you had even ordered the tiles
Frankly the tile supply company have been amazing with what they have done.
I would also be amazed if there isn't a clause on their invoice/terms that specifically state not to book fitters until such time as the tiles have been delivered and checked to be correct with no liability for any costs incurred if you didn't follow this clause.
  • As the others say "your bad" for leaving the tile order too late.
  • Your problem I'm afraid, you didn't leave enough time and they've sorted the problem with the tiles.

I’m currently renovating and with the difficulty getting materials at the moment I wouldn’t have booked tradesman without the items already on site. Sorry it’s not what you want to hear.

This company have gone well out of their way to help you and you repay this with a demand they pay your tradesman who you hired before you had any work for.  I would imagine you have lost all good will that company had for you and any further requests for tiles will not be met.  I hope there are a few places you can buy tiles as companies do not like customers taking the pxzz
  • There's a few things here OP, if the tiler is charging you £140 day it would have been best to negotiate and offer them say £100, although that's a pay cut they wouldn't have any travel and wouldn't actually have to do any work for the money. As you are cancelling their service how you engaged their services originally and what durable information you were given will dictate whether you are legally obligated to pay anything.

Regarding the retailer, assuming you have to (as opposed to do) pay the tiler technically you may be able to claim damages as you've suffered a loss as a result of the goods not conforming to the contract but the question may arise as to why the tiles were ordered so late.

You also still don't have the actual goods you ordered and by them offering a different colour you should have pushed them for a bit of a better price.

Technically where there has been a repair or replacement and the goods still do not conform you have the final right to reject or a price reduction but you appear to have agreed to the colour alteration as part of the replacement so it's probable these rights wouldn't apply.

If you are happy with the tiles you now have I would put it down to a learning experience as the time and expense to chase £140 given the stores reply probably isn't wort the effort. Looking at technicalities for not paying the tiler is an option but if that happens they aren't going to come back and do the tiling.

It was unwise to book a tile before you had suitable tiles.

It also would have wise to check the tiles once they had arrived.

Poor project management and too tight timeframes caused this issue so I would not expect anyone else to foot the bill.

Did you check ok the day the tiler was due that he hadnt gone off to do another job? You could have redeployed him to do something else! Or offered a tiler to friends or family as you had already paid!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Thanks everyone Never done this before Hoping I never do it again
