Contacted EDF today and was told that I could not setup a DD for another 15-20 days and when I do, I will not be able to backdate the DD to 4/12/21.

Underhanded at the best - disgusting at the worse.

The problem there is that you were talking to front line CS who, in all honesty, have not got a clue.  if they do do it that way they will be inundated with complaints and, if they do not change it, they will get a roasting from the ombudsman.

As long as the direct debit is set up by the end of January, you’ll be backdated the direct debit tariff to the time of switchover to EDF from Zog.
    • Please set up your Direct Debit on or before 31 January 2022 and you're guaranteed the cheaper rate that Direct Debit customers benefit from. If you set up your Direct Debit before 31 January 2022, we'll assess your account and credit you back any monies owed.

  • They’ll work out the difference in tariff prices & credit the difference
