Nutmeg isn’t the worst option out there, but you could get the same portfolio for significantly cheaper if you went DIY and managed it yourself.

If you drill down to what Nutmeg will be investing in (a variety of ETFs), then compare the costs to investing in those same ETFs on other platforms you can calculate the true difference in cost. However Nutmeg do a lot of the work for you (trading, rebalancing etc) which is partly why their fees are higher!
I would say that, to begin with, most people don't have the skills or the time to construct their own portfolio. They probably wouldn't even be able to assess their own risk tolerance, and they'd struggle with the ongoing need for rebalancing. Robo-advisors are a godsend for those who don't have enough to interest an IFA, and for those who don't want to, or are unable to manage their own portfolio, even a passive one.

There'll be different robo-advisors, some better than others. I don't really have any experience with them, and never looked at Nutmeg. I did get enticed by the Wealthify cashback offer (now closed), though, and have surprised myself that I quite like them, despite having to pay them a management fee.
  • A suitable fund on Vanguard would save you money in the long run, as the charges will be less than half of Nutmegs.  If you already use online banking, then you won't have any problem using Vanguards site.  It really doesn't take much effort to educate yourself enough to be able to pick a suitable fund for your time frame / appetite for risk.

If you are investing for 10+ years then have a look at their FTSE Global All Cap Index fund (it is a 100% equity fund that more or less reflects the world economy.)

You could simply open a S&S ISA with them, choose a fund and set up regular payments(I prefer to do mine manually.)  It will go up and down a lot, but you are investing for the long-term, so just have a look every year or so and forget about it.

It's a lot easier than you think.
Think first of your goal, then make it happen!
