Problems getting final energy bill

Hi guys, could do with some advice…

so mum passed on 12th November. I’m trying to get a statement from British Gas but they say she only joined them on 4th November, as she was with Peoples Energy who went bust. PE have yet to pass on details of mums credit/debit balance to BG so they can only give me a bill from 4th November and of course I can’t contact PE as they no longer exist.

Does anyone know what I do? I’m thinking it’s just going to be a case of waiting x number of weeks/months for BG to receive the details..?

thanks!

You can’t do much more than wait. Was she in rented accommodation or her own house?

have you asked to talk to the BG bereavement team?  They may be willing to escalate things.  Or at least be sympathetic to your situation.  if left as is you may be waiting another month for an update - but are things so urgent they can't wait?  I'm sure there's lots of other bills/things that need to be sorted in the meantime.

    sorry for your loss.

In which case the executors are still going to need the service until it is transferred to the beneficiaries or it is sold to a new owner so apart from the need to put any outstanding amount on the IHT forms there is no hurry to get it sorted.

You can't do much at the moment, just wait and focus on one of the other companies. Hopefully by the time you've worked through everyone and towards the tailend of next month BG should be sorted out.

Do you think there will be any IHT liability? If no, then BG isn't a worry. You'll be ae to do a rough calculation based on her previous bill, assuming it was a meter read and not estimate.

Word of advice - only speak with the BG bereavement team, their normal customer service leave a lot to be desired in these circumstances.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
  • Thanks all. I don't think IHT should be a concern - it's barely above £400k in total, and we have the £325k plus the £175k house thingy so we should be well under.

Yeah I did speak with BG's bereavement team but they also left a bit to be desired tbh... :-(

I don't know if this will be of any help at all, but I still have access to my Peoples Energy online account.

Just work out what you think it should be at DOD if you have access to the details.

Can put that in the accounts as an estimate and that will do for IHT forms.

Then you can decide to leave the account or transfer depending what will happen tot he property.

We transferred into personal name to close the estate liability at DOD tonot have any use in the estate during administration.
