We are due to go to Mexico for Christmas. Return 4 Jan. What happens if we test positive before we come home? 😧

You have to follow Mexican rules which vary somewhat by state

You dont mention where in Mexico you are going to give more precise answer. There may be variances by state but be aware that mask wearing is expected almost everywhere with a few exceptions being when eating/drinking, sitting at a hotel pool etc.

So a day trip to the pyramids will be wearing a mask continuously for the whole trip on the bus, walking around the site etc other than when actively eating. Not ideal given the 30C temps at the moment in certain respects but a good thing from another angle.
  • You will not be able to return to UK until you have a negative test result .
  • Cancun. I know we can't return to the UK but what happens to our return flight and what will the locals do with us?

Rules for Quintana Roo NUEVO CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) | qroo.gob.mx  unfortunately heavy use of graphics so hopefully your Spanish is good.

You need to quarantine for 14 days from a positive test result. Some hotels have special rates/rooms for people forced to quarantine - Hilton for example are giving a 50% discount for guests who are then forced to extend their stay to quarantine - check with your own hotel. There are some quarantine hotels too if your own hotel doesnt offer anything

As to what happens to your flight it depends on your airlines T&Cs and your ticket type... a lot of airlines have more flexibility to allow you to change your ticket if you need to than normal but it does vary by carrier. We've been booking using Avios so can always change up to 24 hours beforehand even without Covid rules.

If stories on Tripadvisor are to be believed, there are certainly some hotels that arent wanting to be involved in the whole thing and offer falsified negative results to get you off property.

Worth studying the terms of your travel insurance policy to determine the basis on which they'd deal with you becoming infected and consequently requiring accommodation and rearranged travel....
