There are so many scams nowadays.
The solicitor should have provided you their account details at the beginning of the transaction.
Also good the banks picked it up, the name of the solicitor and bank details needs to match, this is a good feature even now when sending money via online banking it confirms the name of the account matches the account details.

I walked down to the office and asked the lady on reception to write down the account details for me. She produced a printed sheet from a great big pile of them - was reassuring to know I wasn’t the only worried in townSend some odd figure- £1.17, say. Then ring your conveyancing firm and ask them to tell you the amount they have received. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?2

AS others have said, its a very common scam. Many solicitors provide heir bank details in hard copy right at the beginning , and also give an express warning tat they won't provide or accept bank details by e-mail, in order to avoid this .
But you should always double check, using a phone number from the original client care letters you have, to ensure that you are getting through to the right people and not using a number from a scam e-mail.All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
When I phoned my bank to transfer the purchase price to the vendor solicitor, my bank asked many questions about what checks I had done to verify the recipient was the correct person. The bank checked it was a valid account but asked me quite a few questions before transferring the money.0
