It still seems odd that Vaillant seem to be happy for any registered engineer to do the installation but not for the same person to diagnose and repair a fault.
Perhaps soon to be a no longer registered engineer.

My local engineer came out this evening and spent 2 hours fitting a new part which i think was a diverter valve. He had a lot of trouble getting a certain plate off with one of the screws being overtight. It still isnt fixed and after running the water, turning it off then on again 30 minutes later, it became quite warm but went cold again. So, now hes telling me that vaillant will accept a minimum of me providing an extendable ladder that goes through the hatch but, more importantly, that the crawling boards are fixed in place, either nailed or screwed. He isnt sure what is wrong with the boiler and thats why he says vaillant needs to come out and inspect it. He did say that it was definitely a fault with the boiler but accepted that it was one of his team who probaby knocked the condensate pipe late last year.

Why not a loft ladder that pulls down, can get them from B&Q and maybe places like Screwfix, Toolstation.
Depends on the loft door. If the loft door drops down then it's fine, but if it's one that you push up to lift off "the lid" inside the lift to then go in, it wouldn't work. I unfortunately have the latter and when I looked at buying one to fit myself, they only worked on ones where the loft hatch dropped down. If anyone else knows different please let me know since I am begrudged to pay a few hundred for a company to fit one.

  • My loft hatch is a push up and would have had to be converted for  a loft ladder. So on friday i bought a 3 piece extendable ladder and also had my crawling boards in the loft screwed down.
A vailant engineer came out yesterday and deduced that it was a faulty/worn shower valve which meant that when the mixer shower in the bathroom was turned off and its temperature lever control (not thermostat) was left in the warm position it wasnt allowing warm/hot water getting to the kitchen faucet. It seems a strange one as why did my local plumber not detect it?

Has the shower vavle been replaced and has this fixed the problem? I wouldn't consider the question as to why your local plumber wasn't able to detect this as the cause, until you actually know that it is the cause, and not the engineer not wanting to have to deal with the over tight screws.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  •    The vaillant engineer deduced that the shower is at fault . It was my thoughts that it could be a faulty shower valve not his (apologies!) When he switched the boiler off in the loft there was a reduced stream of water running from the kitchen hot tap and he said there should be no water running at all. Thats when he went to check the shower!
The shower temperature control lever can still be turned left and right. When turned to the right, on cold , with the boiler on, the water runs hot from the kitchen faucet and runs cold when the shower lever is set to hot. There is a small metal button on top of the lever , i think it just keeps a certain position locked, and that is broken and can be pulled out!

  • This morning i have submitted my meter readings for the first time since this problem. To my amazement my gas consumption is 188m^3 for a 31 day period and that figure is almost identical to the figure for the previous two months combined.
There is definitely something wrong! My energy supplier bill is almost instantaneous when i submit meter readings and their deductions are accurate for my meter reading. There is no way im using so much gas, i did expect an increase with it being december but not so much! My energy supplier havent applied the gas charge yet and are reviewing it!
So, my feeling is either the Vaillant engineer or my local engineer have'nt set my boiler correctly, the boiler is faulty to begin with or the shower is at  fault?
