Gas bill rises. Arrrrrgh!

My Gas supplier has recently gone bust and OFGEM in their infinite wisdom have transferred my supply to Shell Energy. Shell have asked me to set up a direct debit with them for the suggested amount of £111.00. My previous bill per month was round about £28.00! £111.00 sounds like a ridiculous amount to me. I phoned them up and they said that I was on a variable tariff (a standing charge of 24.11p per day and a rate of 20.680p Kw/h). does this make any sense to anyone?
Dan.

  • not knowing how much energy you use it's impossible to say anything.

your previous DD - was this based on bills issued with actual mater readings (not estimates) - was this correct? Were you in debit or credit?

Your new DD will be based on Shells estimated usage - if you know your usage and your rates you can work this out for yourself. If it's way lower than £111 pm (£1332 pa) and you we're not in Debt then you may be able to argue to reduce it. But, as said, you'd need to argue it so you'll need all your previous figures.

That my initial thoughts, other will no doubt identify other things I've missed!  :)

    Welcome to the forum.
Are you sure you've been quoted a gas tariff?  20.68p/kWh sounds more like electricity.
Basically you need to do nothing, you'll be on the deemed Standard Variable Tariff which is capped, so it doesn't get much better than that at the moment.
However, you need to think in annual kWh from actual meter readings, not just ££.  Your DD should then be the Annual Consumption divided by 12.
Unless you live in a broom cupboard £28 per month for gas seems very low.  Did you end up with a debit that was carried across to Shell?
  • Hi,
remember coming into the winter months when usage will be high.
If you have no credit built up with Shell then that could be the reason.
Were you on a cheap deal with previous supplier, £28 a month sounds cheap?

That's definitely an electricity tariff, gas should be closer to 4p/kWh. Maybe that's the problem!
Edit to add: Shell's "Flexible 6" tariff, as offered to SoLR customers, can be found by following the links here (where someone else has done all the hard work to collate it).

Maximus - the usual advice  - keep on top of those meter reads every month then read the bills/statements as you get them.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
