Alternatively you could SORN it on 30 June 2022 and then take out a year's tax from 1 July 2022 so the next tax due will be on 1 July 2023 when it will be the lower rate.

What if the SORN refund doesn't refund the higher rate only the basic rate?

No idea. I never get a refund on SORN as I pay monthly so the new payment starts with the new DD
But you would still need to agree what term you're setting that DD up? Unless I'm wrong.

I wish it was clear on the gov website...

I didn't realise that was how it works, on DD you pay as you go.  So I guess that having a monthly DD then SORN on 30th June, and taxing for 12 months at a Post Office on 1st July would work.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

SORN definitely does not return any part of the surcharge.
  • I’m in a similar position this month and wondered….  This is my last year of paying the Addie £335 charge. My question is could I sorn it for a couple of days end of this month and renew following month to avoid this charge?

    Has anyone done anything similar?
