I’ve been very happy with this phone, as it serves my needs really well. For example, it was charged a day ago, and it is still showing 90% battery remaining.

The only thing that concerns me is that it is still on Android 10, and the latest security upgrade was February 2021. Realistically, should this concern me at all? I’m not concerned about missing out on the Android 11 features, but security is a concern.

There’s at least one unofficial Android 11 version available for the phone. Should I consider installing that to get up to date security?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I wouldn't worry about it. Motorola are notorious for late updates, if it's still running fine and you're happy then no reason to change it.

I'm still using a G6 Play (Android 9) and the only reason I'm looking to change now is that it's started to run slowly in recent months.

My Moto E4plus is still on Android 7.1.1 and the battery still last 2-3 days so I shouldn't get to worried about it. Nobody has has tried to hack into it (they wouldn't find much , even if they did)

I fancy summat else but TBH there's not a lot of point as it does everything I need it to and new phones seem to be even bigger and heavier

Yes, I bought my wife a G9 and she complains it’s too big.

  • Laverly phone yer G7 Power. Just changed the battery on mine (battery bloat had pushed the back off).

It's not due to receive any more software updates but I wouldn't worry too much either, although It's not my primary phone and I don't run banking / finance apps on it. It does have Malwarebytes Pro running but that's just because it was a freebie from RBS.
  • Must admit that I changed my Moto G5 recently for the G30 model, purely and simply because of the security issue. I use my phone for banking apps and transact most of my banking business this way. The Motorola support of the G5 ended some time ago and personally I felt this was too much of a risk operating on an old unsupported Android platform. Had it not been for this consideration, the G5 was an excellent phone with good battery life and perfectly acceptable levels of performance.

Given (so I understand) that Android apps each run in their own sandboxes (so all another app can know is the file name, size, and date/time stamp, and whether or not it is running) what security issues are likely?

How many features in Android 11 or 12 would you find useful?  How many changes will you regret?

I think they change stuff way too often and sometimes it removes features that you may use. A lot of changes
are just cosmetic that you can do yourself.  Changes for sake of change.

FYI @GDB2222 my Moto G8 Plus is also on Android 10 and it received a security patch in October 2021.

  • Just an observation which may be of some interest on this topic. Certain bank apps cannot work with all features on older operating systems. Monzo, just as a for instance, have recently altered their terms and conditions and amongst other things mention -

    "Summary of the main changes

    ·  We’ve changed how we explain the different ways you can send money and make payments in Monzo, to make it clearer to follow.

    ·  We’ve explained that some Monzo features won’t always work on much older phone operating systems, so you should keep your phone and app up to date.

    ·  We’ve clarified the circumstances when we can close someone’s account"
