Recommend a low-end web host?

Hi

Can anyone point me towards a low-end, cheap web host?

I just need to host about 250MB of files. Monthly traffic of less than 500MB.

No fancy features, no emails, no subdomains, no SQL, no blah, blah, blah (not even a website - the UI is via an externally-hosted private wiki), it is just needed to host files linked from the wiki. Weekly backups is fine. 48hour service response time is fine. It is for a small closed-user-group (<10 users) to access a few reference files occasionally.

We have been doing this for >15 years for £7-10 a year, which is fine. Suddenly all I can find is companies offering services that are 20x over-engineered for what I need at £40 a year, and a load of double-glazing-salesman blah blah blah salestalk on their websites. Or pricing that looks OK, but which turns out to only be for the first month/year when you dig  through to the smallprint.

-

Also, while I'm here, a low-end domain registrar. Just renewing a single .co.uk once a year. Nothing else. Cheap.

£20 a year all-in (hosting and registration); stable pricing with an honest, no-BS provider would be grand.

thanks

I use 20i.com for my domain names and Amazon AWS for hosting.
Depending on what they are, how about using a cloud service like Google Drive for the files you need to share?

Just to close the loop - I eventually went with this webhost for £4.60 a year - 85% cheaper than all the typical cpanel sharks that the search engines throw up.

    It seems fine, so far.

there's a useful forum with non-mainstream suppliers' offers here

You can get free webhosting with Infinity.  I signed up with them ages ago, but haven't actually got round to creating a website yet... so I can't really give an opinion on their service.

    Have you read the T&C's?

There really is no such thing as a free lunch.

Totally useless for the OP who wants to host files for download rather than a website - strictly not allowed:

There are all sorts of clauses that will result in termination of your free service such as using an adblocker:

And will happily suspend your website for 24 hours for exceeding their CPU usage limits but won't actually tell you what that limit is:

You might not even get as far as building your website before the ban you:

And this list goes on with RAM / IO / hits / inode / SQL all being limited to some secret formula that they can't share with you but will happily suspend your website if you exceed them.

Probably only useful for a "this website in under construction" holding page.

If you really want to do it on the cheap, I run 6 low traffic websites from a Raspberry PI 4B at home but have none of the crippling limits of file storage or CPU usage. Under synthetic load testing it handled 4,800 page requests in 7 mins from 100 users with an average response time of 1.5 seconds.

I would look at TSO Host (Very low end) or Siteground (My best recommendation if your budget can stretch)

TSO Host have a range of plans - not all are low end. ;)

Just thinking outside the box ... could the OP not have used Google Drive/shared files? They could even have created a specific Gmail account for the group. That way these relatively small files could have been hosted for free. :)
