Kitchen Circuit upgrade cost?

We have been having issues with our built-in oven cutting out at high temperatures. The kitchen was already here when we moved in. It transpires thae the issue is that the oven is wired into the kitchen circuit even though it has a rating >3KW. We have 2 options - get a replacement oven with a standard 13 amp plug or upgrade the circuit/move the oven to a dedicated higher wattage circuit. Trying to get hold of a spark that will return calls (!) but in the meantime does anyone have an idea how much it might cost ballpark to do the upgrade? We are in Greater London.

  • If you have the oven wired into its own circuit, then it will be on its own feed from the consumer unit.  This will involve:
    1. Running a new cable capable of handling the power from the consumer unit to the oven.  Depending on the layout of your property and how neat an tidy you want it this could involve all sorts of minor building works.
    2. Potentially installing a new consumer unit if there is no spare "way" in the existing one for the new cable.
    3. Installing a cooker connection point near the cooker.  Unlikely to be a big job.
Because it is all so variable, its not possible to even estimate the cost.

Is there a supply for an electric hob already in place ?
If so (and the cable is up to it), wiring the oven to that circuit may be an option.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.
  • Thanks for replies I have someone coming to take a look on Monday.
  • There is a cooker connection point already in place and the induction hob has a separate supply but I guess will have to wait for assessment on site

I'm not really sure why the oven would cut out at high temperatures due to inadequate wiring. Do you mean it trips the rcd so you have to keep resetting it?

Regardless, the person on Monday will be best placed to advise.
