Halifax Reward Account - £3 monthly fee incorrectly applied

Although I have diligently paid in £1500 to the account every month since I opened it, including on November 1st 2021 and December 1st 2021, a monthly fee of £3 was applied to my account on December 1st which I spotted today.

I rang up Halifax ( and happily wasn't kept waiting at all ) and asked about it. The adviser couldn't really explain why the fee was charged but  is putting through a £3 credit to refund me.

He didn't convince me that this month's anticipated £5 reward ( assuming I've made £500 of debit card purchases and never gone overdrawn) will appear in my account so I'll keep a close eye on that around the normal payment date of the 12th.

Hope no one else has the same problem but if so then maybe there's something going awry at Halifax.

Nothing here out of the ordinary on my reward account, no account fee applied.
  • Thanks for checking. Hopefully it’s just a problem with my account.

On my club Lloyds, I believe the £3 fee leaves my account at the start of the day and the £3 fee waived payment is at the end of the same day. I don't know if Halifax do the same thing but that might explain it.

Unlike Lloyds, Halifax don’t take the fee at all if you meet the criteria.
  • I had this happen a couple of months ago, I was on hold for about an hour and when I got through he agreed that there was no reason for the charge. I was refunded the charge and credited the £5 (requested as I didn’t want to be out of pocket). Weirdly the £5 bonus was added on the normal day so I ended up £5 up.

Thanks - so it’s not just me then.

A quick update to say that my expected £5 reward did appear on the 12th. Still don't know why the £3 fee was applied at the start of the month so I'll continue to keep an eye on things.
