Sealing a shower enclosure.

Options
Hello.

So I've noticed that my shower enclosure doors were installed before the shower tray was sealed round the edge.

What this means is that any water getting behind the doors drips to the bottom and there is no sealant to stop it going behind.

Luckily I believe the tray is a 4 side upstand so no damage has happened over the last 4 years.

My question is can I seal down the inside of the doors rather than having to take them all off and trying to seal behind it?

  • Generally you shouldn't seal the inside of the enclosure at the bottom because water will somehow find it's way into the internal voids of the enclosure and leaving the inside/lower parts unsealed will allow it to run back out into the shower tray rather than sitting inside and causing corrosion/mould and finding its way to the outside of the enclosure.
If it's been ok for the last 4 years then i can't see that sealing the inside of the doors, but leaving an inch or so unsealed at he bottom would be an issue.

My other option is to remove the existing sealant and try and get behind the door while I'm redoing it. Why do I feel in gonna have to take these annoy doors off. 😂
