I have sent my son a handmade quilt as a present. noted on the tax form as gift and value as £150. He has to pay 86 euros import tax. Does anyone know if this is correct or where I can find a table of import taxes . I do not speak Italian

It's probably not right, no, unless the shipping company is charging about £40 for processing it through customs.andysomerset said:I have sent my son a handmade quilt as a present. noted on the tax form as gift and value as £150. It should have only incurred import VAT at 22% so around £33, rather than the ~£76 he's being asked for. This will be up to your son to sort out, however. Presumably he does speak Italian (or can find someone who does as they're not in short supply in Italy) and can find out what the process is for incorrectly levied import duty/VAT.1 -
Presumably your son understands Italian so wouldn't it be easier for him to find out in Italy why import tax has been calculated as it has?andysomerset said:I have sent my son a handmade quilt as a present. noted on the tax form as gift and value as £150. There are plenty of online calculators that will say what the tax element will be, then the question is how much the courier is charging for doing the clearing. In the UK its typically a small percentage of the monies due with a floor around £15 but in other countries it can be much more.
The original country of origin for the item will also impact if there is duty or not in addition to the 22% sales tax
Remember you have to inc the P&P inc insurance on top of the £150 declared value when calculating whats due.

Best way to get presents for people in different countries is to use the local Amazon,it takes away all the hassle of custom taxes etc. If you have a UK Amazon account will work anywhere.0
