Changing to direct debit gas and electricity - BULB

Hi there, I am currently with bulb as my gas and electricity supplier but on a top up card for both. We have been wanting to change to a direct debit for a while and with the recent bulb news I would like to know who is best or recommend to go with and on average how much would this change to monthly direct debit be?

I had to get Bulb to install credit meters before I could switch as I had prepayment meters.

Bulb customers are not going to be moved to another supplier any time soon as Bulb are in the 'Special Administration Regime' so this is not like the other recent failures.
I would suggest you talk to Bulb about changing to a credit meter and what changes that would make to your tariff.

  • Your situation is a bit like someone switching into a new supplier late in the year when heating is on. Most suppliers will expect you to have at least a supply month’s credit in your account with the first payment being made before energy is supplied. Your situation is also complicated by the fact that Bulb’s prices will rise in line with the revised Cap in April and again in October 2022.

Bulb will look at your historical usage and it will make a judgement on the costs for the year. If you were switching to a credit meter in say May then Bulb would probably set your DD at 1/12 of your annual estimated cost. If you want to do it now, the DD will be set much higher and reduced in the Spring. Remember DD payments are not charges. It is just a fund from which actual charges for energy used are deducted.
