it must be laptop playing up..... as it never asked for a password, but it came up connected to the internet, but when i tried to get on a page it said unable to connect !!

    this is driving me mad.....
shall i install windows xp on laptop as it only has 2000 windows.....??
it was working before with 2000 on it...

What software are you using with your wireless card? If it is the software that came with the card, try using Windows wireless to manage the connection. Start, Control Panel, Wireless Network Set-up.

Also make sure that you are actually trying to connect to your own network and not someone elses. Change the name of your network name (SSID) to something different to the default.

Edit: Not sure that WIN 2000 supports WPA encryption.

I start by turning off all protection/firewalls.

Then when I have it connected I turn one on and check is still works.

    Then another and so on.

Have you entered the encryption key that you entered into the router yet? Does it work if you disable encryption in the router? Have you tried using WEP encryption, if WIN 2000 does not support WPA?

No it makes no difference and it's best to keep one machine cabled.
