E.ON Next Direct Debit set up twice

After being moved from Symbio, I setup my DD with E.ON Next.  I check my online banking today and notice that there are two mandates from EON Next.  After contacting my bank to query this, I was told that EON had done this.

Earlier, I contacted EON through Facebook and was told the following

When the account was transferred to us an initial direct debit was set up, but no action was taken on this it was superseded by the current arrangement, I think you will find that both direct debits registered on your account and not active.

She would not tell me anymore.  I cannot cancel one of the DDs in case one is live and one is not - I may cancel the wrong one.

Cannot really afford two DDs to be taken out when my first payment is due on the 16 Dec.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get one cancelled?

Cancel them both, then set up a new one?

Are both for the same account number?
If not which one matches your E.On a/c number?
    Delete the other.

16th December is a good way away and I'm surprised it's that far away; Does your bank indicate pending payments the 'banking' day before they are taken?  If so keep an eye out to see if only one is being actioned or two?
DD guarantee means if two are taken you can get the bank to claw one back immediately.

Call E.On to formally complain that they've set it up twice?  Maybe cancelling both and setting a new one up (via the 'phone) might be an answer?

BUT you'll have an outstanding energy bill with E.On from 2nd October so around 10 weeks or so - I assume you have a reasonable Symbio credit to pay for much of that.  One E.On DD won't be enough.

I had only been with Symbio since July and they went bust a few days before my DD payment.  I cancelled my DD before it went out.

Today, I had a credit of £31 added to my EON account which is about right.  As things currently stand, I am now £61 in debit with a DD set up for £58 and a few pence.  I am using around £50 a month, so around 6 months to bring my account to zero.  I decided to move over to their 18 month exit-free tariff a couple of weeks ago.  This added about £90 per year compared to the SVT.  As my usage for elec is fairly static each month - this will have cost me around an extra £45.  Yes, I am gambling that electricity will have gone up by more than £45 - but I am prepared to take that risk.  Maybe, as I set up a DD for their SVT and now have a fixed rate, that could be where the two have come from.

I have clicked on both mandates and no further information is available, such as account numbers etc, so I cannot work out if one is live and one is not.

EON's website will not let me make a card payment so I can clear the £60.

My Santander account clearly shows my E.On account reference for the DD.
  • Screenshots attached.  One showing both mandates and the other showing the info.  The info for the other mandate is the same as the one attached.  I bank with VIrgin Money.  Looking at my other mandates, it seems that account details are only added after a DD has been presented.

I've had it before when switching that 2 DDs have been setup, but they've only ever taken money from one, the other was left dormant and after they took money from one of them I cancelled the other.

I've had the same with Tesco mobile, moving banks (switching) showed 2 direct debits set up on the new account. Only one payment was ever taken on 1st Dec from Tesco.
