Money Moral Dilemma: Should I start using the employee discount card from my old job again?

  • Obviously it's illegal, but as you've told them 3 times and it's still active, wil they ever find out?

    Seems like only you can answer if you chance it.
  • You obviously have no right to use the card. 
    How could you know that it has not yet been deactivated unless you are actually still using the card anyway?

    Not a dilemma if you are an honest person.  Cut it up and bin it instead of using it and risking getting a criminal record.

    Just cut the card up and dispose of it. Possibly think about getting a new, more honest partner, too!
    Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

  • It's not illegal. There is no law against using an employee discount card when no longer an employee. When was the last time a story like this was discussed on This Morning or Loose Women? It hasn't because nobody cares about an ex employee using a discount card. Literally no one on this earth cares. So the other posters need to calm down and stop getting their knickers in a twist.

    It could only be considered a breach of contract if it explicitly mentions in your employment contract that you must hand it back after leaving the company. But you've made attempts to rectify it with your previous employer and you've told HR. Therefore it's up to them to deactivate it.

    So go ahead and use it. Life's too short to listen to the 'Mary Poppins' of this world on here. As the previous poster says. Fill yer boots. Your partner sounds like a keeper looking out for the finances.

    There's no "moral dilemma" here. Using that card when no longer an employer is criminal fraud, simple as. The fact that the technology still allows it to work doesn't mean you're authorised to use it!
  • I’d cut up the card and throw it away.  It’s the wrong thing to do and not worth the risk
  • Why are you asking us for permission to do something you already know is wrong and stupid? Do you need help in standing up to your partner?It sounds like they’re bullying you. Is this the only area of your life in which they are exerting pressure on you to do things that you don’t feel are right or that you want to do? If so, you can get help you know.

    I'd have cut it up years ago. Apart from the moral issue - which others have covered - there's bound to be an electronic record somewhere, which means it can be tracked back to you. I doubt they'd prosecute but don't be surprised if you need a reference in future and they refuse to give you one. Or this impacts your fraud rating when you're applying for credit or a mortgage and you get turned down.
    Of course since it's not their card your partner would be less effected, which may be why they're so blase about it.
