Hi
I have recently had to stop work due to ill health. My estimated earnings for 21/22 are around £20000 more than what I have actually been paid to date and therefore, have overpaid income tax and NI. I am now claiming UC and ESA. Would I be able to request a tax or NI contribution refund, is this even a 'thing' or can I not due to the benefits I am now claiming?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You are entitled to a refund of tax overpaid (not NI because that is calculated on a weekly/monthly basis) but probably not until after the end of the Tax year when your income is known.
Note -
1. The ESA you receive is taxable income so you need to include this in any calculations you do.
2. When you get the refund you must tell UC and it will be treated as earnings when calculating your UC entitlement for that month.Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0
