Compact TV speaker

Currently using a Cambridge soundbase which sounds good but is quite big and bulky. We don't really have space round our TV for a soundbar so hoping to get a smallish compact speaker (s?) to hook up to the TV via optical or hdmi. Any recommendations? Looking at below £200 if possible

If you have no space around your TV where do you propose placing a compact speaker? There are lots of small soundbars out there that just sit in front of the TV and take up very little space.
If your TV has a headphone socket you could get some PC speakers.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

You will need a speaker with built in amplification - these are called active speakers so google / ebay 'active speakers' and see if anything suits you. You will probably only need one ie not a pair.
Obviously, check what inputs they have and that you can connect to TV using one of the inputs.2 -
At this price you are basically going to be looking at computer speakers and either need to find one with a DAC to work from optical or split the budget to include a DAC that can take optical input.

If you had a stereo near your tv, then all you’d need is an audio cable to connect from tv to the stereo.May be worth having a look at richer sounds anyway .
I had a Cambridge audio soundbase ( tv2) , and yes they are heavy and bulky . Good sound tho ..0 -

We have a Creative Stage Soundbar, which is narrower than most soundbars. It might be small enough for you?

There's also a slightly more expensive newer (v2) version.

Indeed. I/we have been routing TV sound through a "proper" HiFi system for years.
Best results are had taking the optical audio out, either direct to optical in on the stereo, or getting a little D/A converter box from Amazon or similar, allowing connection to conventional analogue inputs.1
