Just wanted to get some advice on the forum please.
I live with my disabled, bedbound 24/7 care dad and am his carer. My partner cares for me as I have poor mental health. We are both on universal credit. My dad received state pension and attendance allowance, with little savings.

The council tax is in his name for his property and we’ve been told we can’t add our names to it.
We’ve also been told that we do not qualify for council tax reduction.
Is this true? Is it worth pursuing or not please? Thanks

Unless you and/or your partner are either co-tenants or co-owners of the house with your father, you should not be named on the CT bill.
Who has said that your father does not qualify for CTR?If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales1 -

So I presume your father (or you especially if you have Power of Attorney) filled in the online form. Why did the council say no?If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

ThanksThat's correct - only the party who is legally liable for the council tax charge can apply for council tax reduction.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -

Excluding the 2015/2016 period mentioned above, at this time should your entitlement to a carers disregard be confirmed, regrettably a reduction is not applicable as your partner is considered to be a disqualified relative and your fathers GP does not consider him to be severely mentally impaired. Therefore we are unable to disregard either from the charge. As a result, two adults remain that are not disregarded resulting in the full charge being payable. This is from the council, I’m so very very confusedClara Sais - Vlogger and Mummy0

Have you looked at the Disability reliefs referred to ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

This is really one for CIS to answer. I don't know enough about this aspect of CT to offer an opinion. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales1
