Wood Grenade / Splitter — Lump Hammer vs Sledgehammer?

I've seen that you can do this... but can you do it with all splitting mauls / axes?

I would expect to be able to do it with any maul, also if it gets stuck you can hit the poll (back end of the head) with a sledge to drive it through. A splitting axe is not as clear, a splitting axe could refer to an axe shaped for splitting but as the poll on an axe is not typically hardened it should not be used to hit metal or be hit with metal, or a splitting axe could refer to something that is basically a maul and would be fine for such a use.
