Is there any benefit/difference in claiming with my own insurance company rather than the third party's?  I have protected no claims bonus.  Does it make any difference re future premiums, car hire whilst vehicle off road, etc??  Presumably with it being third party fault, my own insurance company would claim all from third party anyway?
Anecdotal but 3rd parties have been pretty good IME as they want to take control of the costs and minimise the potentially expensive credit hire malalrky.
your own insurer may be slower especially if they have limits on car hire or are palming you off to a credit hire firm.
Id definitely go with the 3rd party if it was me.

Keeping it short when similar happened to me.
    - claimed off my own insurer
    - paid out minus excess
    - I had legal cover and instructed them to pursue excess from third party insurer
    - filled in a form
    - excess received a few weeks later

Thanks all.  I've made the claim directly against the third party insurer, and got a hire car being delivered this afternoon.  Just waiting for their settlement figure as they've already confirmed it's a write off.  I'll be keeping it and using the settlement figures towards the repairs costs.

How does the settlement figure from TPI compare with the figure from your own insurance company?
I'm in a similar position atm. I have been offered a settlement from my own insurance company but the TPI are badgering me to deal directly with them.
