Should I put my partners vehicle in my name whilst he is unable to drive

My other half has a van he has not been able to drive for over a year due to a medical condition. He was hoping he would get better sooner, so kept the van, insurance, AA, taxing etc. I have a vehicle too I drive daily, and I am insured separately to drive his van. I do drive it occasionally.

We don't want to sell the van. What is the best solution for now? We're wondering whether it would be better to put the van in my name? Would that be cheaper for the insurance etc as I could just insure myself for two vehicles. Obviously, if he can drive again some day we can change back, but we need a better option for now.

Thanks for your help.

Might be cheaper to keep them insured separately if you both have a decent amount of NCB. Also after a couple of years his NCB will lapse.

Have you thought about SORNing it if you don’t actually need to use it? Either get off road cover or store it off road and decide whether you’re happy to risk it being uninsured against theft.

Does his insurance know the situation and if you were to insure it what no claims would you be using?
  • Thanks. The insurance does not know that he is unable to drive right now. We both have decent NCB.
Unfortunately, we don't have anywhere to store off road for SWORN, but also, I do use the van occasionally.

That could be problematic if you need to claim, so you need to read his policy. If he's renewed he may have made a false declaration.

Also if you insure it your no claims is on your car policy.
