Iberdrola - Equiniti says zero holding

I'm trying to organise my mothers finances. Quite frankly she has never had any understanding relating to her investment portfolio which was inherited. Lately i've been gathering all her old share certificates together and getting them into relevant piles, the plan is to transfer them into Lloyds online share dealing. I have accessed various registrars to find out what she might have on their records. I've discovered that at one time or another she held Iberdrola. She has no knowledge of this, so I assume it's possible that Iberdrola was formed via a change of company name or possibly a bonus issue. Equiniti tell me that my mothers holding was sold quite recently. Looking at Equiniti I see online only the company name and a zero figure to indicate no stocks. My concern is that her bank records do not show any large credits. Is there a simple way of searching a companies name and finding out their historical records?
EDIT: I found out that Iberdrola was created on November 1, 1992 as a result of the merge between Hidroeléctrica Española and Iberduero.
This still leaves me confused why my mother would know nothing about this. I suppose at this stage I can only hope that Equiniti have some records of a sale.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,Scottish Power were taken over by IBERDROLA some years ago, so maybe had SP shares at the time.Edit:
Takeover bid from Iberdrola
On 28 November 2006, the board of directors of ScottishPower agreed to an £11.6 billion takeover bid by the Spanish energy firm Iberdrola. The offer was formally approved by shareholders at an EGM on 30 March 2007, effectively creating Europe's third largest utility company.
