One of my grandsons is staying with me at the moment and he has a raspberry pi.

So I have to show interest while he explains it all to me.

He is in the process of designing a smart home system.

He has a couple of Bluetooth temperature sensors connected to a raspberry pi that record the temperature and humidity every 5 minutes, interesting to see the humidity rise when cooking even though the sensor isn't in the kitchen.

My wife is doing the ironing at the moment with a steam iron and the humidity has risen from 45% to 61%

One sensor sits on the room thermostat downstairs in the lounge and the other is in his bedroom upstairs.

During the day the sensor temperature downstairs varies between 20.7 and 21.3 with the thermostat set at 21 deg c and the upstairs between 20 and 22.79.

During last night the lounge temperature dropped to 16.2 just before the heating came on at 07:45, with a slightly higher temperature of 17.1 in his bedroom.

So how low does your house temperature drop during the night?

Somewhere between 16 and 17C at the moment but thermostat is set to 15C.

Even when we'd been away for a few days with no heating on it only dropped to around 13C
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Our thermostat is set at 15C overnight...I don't think it's EVER triggered the boiler starting up. Highest temperature during  the day is 20C.  So, I guess the answer is that our house drops less than 5 degrees overnight.

Thats a "how long is a piece of string" question as it depends on how cold it is overnight, to what temperature you heated the house whilst you heated the place and for how long and even how much solar radiation the building absorbed during the day.

At the moment it's blowing a hooley, the rain is pouring down so the walls are evaporating heat and the outside temperature hasn't risen above 5 degrees for a couple of days.

Our heating system has been idling away all day and all night keeping the place between 17 degrees overnight and around 20 degrees during the day. If I shut it off then the temp will drop down to around 10 degrees or less, depending on how long its been off.

  • Stat settings  ( same each day)

    Internal Temp

Min temp on that graph = 16.6

Absolutely no idea. No equipment to monitor it.

We turn our thermostat down to 14⁰ as we go to bed.

When the timer clicks on in the morning, the heating either comes on or it doesn't.

But I don't know what the actual temperature is or how low it gets.

Each day when I got home from work last week the thermostat in my lounge was showing about 14 °C. It was about the same this morning too if I remember correctly. It warms up pretty quickly from this point once I turn the heating on so it's not an issue.
  • My top floor, studio flat never drops below 17°C at night, no matter what the temperature is outside. Great for my gas bill but, as a teuchter, I prefer to sleep in a cold room.

You're probably benefiting from heat 'escaping' from the flat underneath yours  :).
  • I was away last night & my lounge was 13.4°c when i got in, just as the heating was coming on. I’d turned the thermostat down a little knowing I’d be away.
House now fully warmed up again, & upstairs is always warmer.

Lounge has a laminate floor & a cellar underneath. Kitchen has a tiled floor. Feels like a slog to keep these two rooms warm. Kitchen is fine, lounge I have a gas fire & a big fluffy blanket.

On the coldest nights it’ll get to about 13-14°c as i don’t run the heating overnight. It’s a mid terrace & the loft is well insulated. Heating comes on for an hour before i get up & warms the place up fine to about 16-17°c & the max is 19°c cos i don’t like it to feel too stuffy. Usually on for 3 hours in the morning & 3 hours from 5pm when i finish work. I’ll manually override it on weekends if I’m cold.
