Import Tax

Options
Hi guys,

I'm a bit confused about this. Last week I ordered a pair of Golf trousers as it was a off brand I wanted to try them out before getting more, Not knowing much about the brand I later find out they are from Sweden. They turn up and they are decent quality and I am happy with them. So yesterday I order 2 more pairs totally £165 for my total order. I then look at my emails today and see DHL want to charge me £66.13 for import tax.

I get there maybe some import charges but this seems a bit steep no?

Few questions

What happens if I don't pay these charges? Will they just get sent back to the sender? and hopefully I get a refund?

I just don't get how I wasn't charged anything for my 1st order but my 2nd order gets hit with this massive bill compared to the overall order amount.

The brand I ordered from was Macade if that's any help.

Isn't there a threshold of £135?  If so, that would explain why the first pair escaped the customs charge.

What can you do? Not much.  You are the importer and as such, are liable for the charge.  You've implicitly agreed that the courier will clear customs for you and they're now passing on the charge plus an administration cost for doing so.  That's why it seems steep compared to the value.  Something like £25 of that will be their admin charge.

They will almost certainly pursue you if you refuse to pay.

Edited to add: Apologies, just re-read and realise they haven't arrived yet.

If you don't pay the charges they might still be delivered and you'd be expected to pay.

I agree that £66.13 isn't right for Import VAT only on £165, even with their fee.

Are you sure these are actually coming from Sweden? If they're coming from outside the EU there would be import duty on top which may well get you to about £66.13.  They say all taxes included but I have my doubts.

    Little chance of that.

No, just a different way of collecting it.

Up to (excluding gifts up to £39) £135 the Courier pays it for you, delivers it then sends the bill. Over £135 then you need to pay before delivery or on collection.

So on the first order you will still be due a bill, you have just not received it yet.

Then lucky to receive the goods. I've been importing from the US and globally for over 20 years. Never not had to pay to release.

More often it's deliver then charge.  Rarely it seems to be request, but deliver then charge anyway.

Îm always aware when my packages are due taxes (at least so far) so I've never had the misfortune of having something raise a charge and still having it delivered so I can't comment from personal experience.

Up to £135 ( excluding gifts) the seller charges VAT and  passes it to HMRC.

Over £135 the courier pays ot and charges you plus and admin charge.

Goods over £135 also attract import duty

  • Thanks guys I just paid it seems a bit excessive to me, Shame cause I would probably end up ordering most of my stuff from there but due to this it's not really feasible now.
