Digital Photo Frame

Thinking of getting the in-laws a digital photo frame for Xmas

Nothing too complicated  - can we load our photos on 'digitally'? (They have FTTC internet)
Some (Aura - Mason Luxe)  seem to want read *and* write access to all your photos before you can upload, which is a bit scary!

Any suggestions?

I have many of the older 'static' frames ( USB stick or SD card loaded)  and wasn't aware of these Aura frames till your post
I had been looking for something like this a couple of years ago

In our case it was for elder relatives (90s - 100+)  without wifi etc so it was easier all round just to post out a new USB stick every 3 months or so

    Anyway back to the Auras,
Best place to start is with some youtube reviews ....

The unlimited storage is a refreshing change, earlier attempts at remotely loadable frames had some ridiculously low limits to number of pictures you could show

Should we be concerned that they want read/write access?

Should we be concerned that I've never heard of them? (Sister in law had a Kobo e reader which is now fairly obsolete!)
  • It seems it does have support for Google Photos,
so assuming that only needed to be configured once via the app there might be some element of future -proofing there ?
So presumably then it would monitor one of your shared google photo albums, and you would update the pictures in there rather than via the app

    Lots of presumptions there !

Certainly a shame it doesn't have usb/SD as a fall back

Nothing to do with read/write access, but I purchased a digital frame some years ago but the mains lead was so short (1 metre) that it was impossible to put the frame where we wanted/needed it to be. The intention had been to put it on the mantelpiece so an extension problem wouldn't help either. Just something worth checking.

Everyone (apart from me!) M-i-L, 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren are all of the apple persuasion
Is there some sort of iSimilar?

Just go for an Amazon Echo show instead of a dumb photo frame. That way you'll get so much more useful stuff to use as and when needed.

Thanks, but I'm not sure they need or would use the 'useful stuff'
  • I’ve found that using a high-resolution screen makes a big difference in how good photos look. Also, having a remote control helps a lot if you want to change settings easily.
