Hi

I’m trying to help a neighbour who’s husband had a stroke. She’s trying to get a new boiler as her old one is 25 years old and has been told it’s on its way out. She needs a 35kw boiler as it’s quite a large house.

Her husband gets personal independence payments due to his stroke but she says she’s struggling to find someone to give her a quote. The previous company she found quoted her for a boiler that wouldn’t be suitable.

Does anyone have any advice or experience of the best way to go about sorting. I recommended she gets 3 quotes just to reduce the chance of getting conned.

do you apply through a government scheme or does the company installing sort all the paperwork out?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am sure that there will be means testing. Have they considered moving to a smaller house?

Several electricity company's do help with replacing boilers.
I know edf and eon both do.

  • Due to being on universal credit and being a homeowner, I qualified for the EON Home warmth discount.
What happened in my situation ; after completing the online questionnaire I received notification of a home visit to evaluate my flat etc.

The chap arrived on the date mentioned . He asked to see my UC Journal, plus documents proving I'm a homeowner . He then assessed my flat, doing a technical drawing . As my old boiler was in the spare bedroom , it was deemed to be in the  wrong place and the new boiler would have to be installed into the wall on the other side of the  window . He told me that I would be getting a new boiler " probabky less than £500"
A few weeks later, I received a call on my mobile and paid £240 for new Worcester combi boiler!  A few weeks after that , the new boiler was installed in one day oppsed to the three days quoted . I can't say enough good things about my experience .

. Bear in mind , criteria is different for everybody. Plus there are only certain parts of the year to apply before a certain cut off point .
    Hope this helps ..

Nah, they'd never do it. Think it'd be too much stress for them.

Thanks, I've managed to find a list of all the providers of it now

Really useful thank you. Did you shop around at all or just go for the first one? Was the chap from EON or was he from the government agency? Just wondering who does what. They've had one person round but he quoted for a 25kw boiler, which wouldn't be sufficient for their house size. They need a 35kw boiler.

What happened initially for me ; moved into my flat in 2017. Boiler was on its last legs .
I paid quite a lot out for service plus managed to get it insured. Eventually boiler was on the verge of being condemned. That was a gloworm flexicom . Annoyed that I couldn't get a straight answer if it was worth trying to keep it , I fished around for help . This was phoning edf who I'm with. Rude woman on phone wasn't helpful at all and said no I won't get it . I looked around the Internet and ( long story almost short), found that Eon deemed that I qualified .
I tried a lot of people / places.

With Eon , they sent contractors out that they use . A proper company who have good reviews. No gvt people were involved . The person who assessed my flat ,checked my journal on my iPad and documents that I provided to prove that I did indeed qualify.
The new boiler is bigger and much nicer than that horrid gloworm . Plus it is placed higher up at a proper level , and not on my knees as I was with the old one .
Its best to listen to the engineers as they know the score. If. You are debating the type of boiler that is potentially being offered to you , I'd recommend you ask in the in my home section . One other thing , my new boiler is guaranteed for 7 years. I will have to pay for yearly service as normal but that guarantee is a nice touch considering how much I paid
Still I deserved a bit of luck imho ..
The first thing to do is to see what companies will accept your neighbours.
Then they have to hope that they haven't missed the window for the year to be accepted
Then they have to have everything to hand for when the assessor comes around, as well as tea and biscuits.
One other thing ..I was very lucky to just get boiler installed  spring 2020 just before lockdown . Covid will still dictate things for some time ..

Thanks, that’s really helpful. I’ll get her to give E.On a try and hopefully she can get it sorted. If not I’ll get her to ring round some other companies.
