I see a success thread on here, but just a bit keen to know how this process works.

I was paying £64.50 p/m for Sky Superfast Broadband, Phone Line with Weekend minutes + Sky Signature, Box Sets Package, Sky Sports, Netflix & Ultra HD.. was happy with the package until my end of contract & the best deal they'd do me was £115 + £20 admin fee for new contract for 18 months.. I went to retentions who would only remove the £20 as being a loyal customer.. (new customer deal is much better).

Anyway, I've ended up cancelling as expected a better offer and heard how people received offers in their account within minutes after cancelling.. it's been 3 days for me now.  My partner is concerned as needs the broadband to work from home.

When do you generally get contacted via Sky & how do they communicate, I've heard people refusing the first 2 offers but at least they've had contact made.  I'm yet to hear.

Hoping for some positive news as I feel they've called my bluff here and I'll be back to the stone age.

Thanks!

  • Choose a new broadband provider and get a switch in place.you can worry about the other stuff later.

I know full well I can actually move, but do like the Sky Service.. just not the price - followed the MSE advise on haggling for a better deal with apparantly 50% of the best deals given to customers after cancellation... just doesn't give much more information on how they actually entice you back.
  • Isn’t it possible to sign up as a new customer once you’ve cancelled and your contract has ended? I do this with insurance every year (except this year, renewal quotes have been weirdly the cheapest!) Slight delay in service for a couple of days but should easily be reconnected since they already supply the property.

Bit late now - but as the broadband is essential, you should have just cancelled the TV package. The danger you face ,is that the broadband cancellation will take effect and IF lines are in short supply in your area you MAY not get your line back instantly because Openreach will use it for another customer.
TV can be re-enabled literally within an hour of renewal.

Not unless you sign up in a new name and with a new payment method  (ie different bank account) - Sky have seen thru that one a long time ago !

I think the problem is these days they can lose one customer but gain 2 more. There isn't as much competition between tv providers as there are broadband so they are holding out more over price haggling.
I haggled Sky for a better deal but they wouldn't move. They actually did me a favour because after doing a stock take on what we watched, I cancelled the multiscreen and Netflix and bought a ROKU for £20 saving me £15 a month on Sky. I had Prime as well and realised I don't watch much on Sky anyway.

At one time I was subscribed to Netflix, Sky, Apple TV, Spotify, Prime and Apple Music. Its amazing how these companies reel you in and you end up with more than you could possibly use!
  • We were in a similar situation a couple of months ago - I work from home so need broadband, Sky contract renewal price was £120ish but we were going to move to Virgin.
Sky called us about a week after cancelling I think. Then they called every few days. We didn't receive an offer by email or in the app.
They eventually offered us the same deal we were on before but Virgin was still £20 cheaper a month. When Virgin didn't install on the date scheduled (2 weeks after cancelling Sky), we decided it would be easier to stay with Sky. We spoke to them on the online chat about staying and they offered us £1 cheaper than our previous deal and added Netflix. We agreed to this but at the last minute they informed us we were past the cut off for our broadband and it would go off in a couple of days and then could take 14 days to be reinstated. Obviously this was not ideal so I bought a mobile broadband dongle type thing to cover the internet in the meantime. However, this wasn't needed as it never did actually go off. It was quite stressful not knowing when/if the internet was going to go off (because of work) so I would definitely call them back within 2 weeks if you don't hear from them and do want to stay.
  • Just start a new broadband contract vodaphone are doing super fast for £20 a month with £150 gift card they wil get notification straight away then they may ring if not it’s a huge saving
on what your paying, then get Netflix  for £5.99 a month, with the gift card factored in that’s £20 a month is sky tv worth £100 a month or £1200 a year ?

With broadband, if you sign up to another service, Sky will usually contact you on the pretence of "We just wanted to check it was actually you" and use that as an excuse to start up a retentions conversation; although whether they'll do that if you've got the service under pending cancellation, I don't know.

As for TV, honestly, it's a lottery. I've had them call any time within 1-3 weeks of cancelling.

One time they tried calling 4 days after I cancelled, I missed the call, and they never called back, nor did they make any other retention attempts until three months after my TV service had been switched off.

Last time they invited me to text them. Usually, there has been an offer available on the website or through the box, but last time there never was one, and it looks like there might not be one this time either.
She would always like to say,
Why change the past when you can own this day?
  • My other worry is, I turned off all the tick boxes for “contact me with offers via…” as didn’t want to be hounded.  I’ve enabled them now but just have to play the waiting game I suppose.
