Having a right mare! So i moved 5 weeks ago into my new house. I was with EDF at my old property and was on a fixed tariff. My new property is supplied by British gas. I contacted EDF when I moved and they have basically failed to switch me over to them and just closed my account down. So when I rang they said theyl take back over from British gas.....few weeks have gone by and still nothing. They just don't do it. So now I've had enough and just rang British gas (who say EDF haven't even attempted to take over) and they've changed me to pre pay smart meters (I choose this cause I wanted to control how much I'm spending). Ive set some money aside from what I used to pay EDF....but my bill from my move in date to now is much higher than I expected from British gas.....basically I don't know what to do. British gas is so pricey. I rang EDF AGAIN and they're saying if I go on a variable tariff with them il be effected by the cap and started pushing me to get a fixed. Does anyone know the cheapest at the minute?? Because I'm not locked into anything I can just leave. Thanks

  • You cant port a supplier and a tariff from one house to another, that was your first mistake. Especially not a cheap fixed rate that EDF probably couldnt wait to get rid of.
Also, the variable is the cheapest rate.

Edf said I could. They agreed to continue my tariff.. I even have messages confirming that. So the standard variable rate I have with British gas is the cheapest?
  • Yes.

I would be very surprised if they agreed to that in the current climate tbh. Would you mind posting them, redacting any personal info?
  • My understanding is that your old account will be closed and you will have had to provide a closing read to EDF when you left the old house. For the new house I think you have to sign up for an account with BG until you get your first bill from them, and then initiate a switch in the normal way to EDF. So it's effectively a completely new account and tariff with EDF. If I'm wrong about this I'm sure someone with more knowledge will advise.

As regards the tariff, I think the current wisdom is still to stick with the variable tariff as there are no fixes available that are any cheaper than that. of course, when the cap goes up next April the variable tariffs will go up as well, but as you are not tied in to anything you might then be able to move to a fix, but we won't know until then as to whether there will be any fixes worth switching to.

this is said a few times that my daily standing charge etc will not change. Also said over the phone
  • Some suppliers will offer to transfer a tariff to a new property (subject to regional price differences) provided a switch back to them is initiated within an agreed period of time. This still requires the customer to sign up with the deemed supplier before initiating the switch. In these circumstances, the supplier will still raise a Final Bill for the old property. The deemed supplier has to be paid for all energy consumed while the switch goes through.
  • You have got very lucky if they have agreed to put you back on a fixed tariff for them to lose even more money off you. What were the unit costs and standing charges?

Well do you think the message above suggests they was? Because it does to me. I cant remember off the top of my head, I think it was approx 5p cheaper per day than BG in the standing charge for both gas and electric. It was a good tariff. Maybe that's why they've failed to switch me back to them

Quite likely that its an offshore contact centre and I would suspect that EDF will not honour the tariff claiming "it was a mistake by the member of staff on chat""

Thats my thought too. I would want it in writing via email.
