If it's any consolation (and I doubt it will be), and assuming Orbit were charging roughly the Ofgem cap (25p/day SC per fuel, 4p/kWh gas, 21p/kWh electricity), your new tariff with your Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) won't be any higher.
    ...
And considering the pre-increase charges were something like:

Gas: 2.513p per kWh / 26.02p per day
    Elec:
    12.179p per kWh / 26.36p per day
(these were the rates for the NE supply region)

    - it makes one wonder just how much energy the OP used in October, a very mild month, to have incurred an extra cost of
    £100-110 because of this change

OP shouldn't really have been surprised by the large increase. Have a look in the spam folder to see if the email ended up there.

Approx around 1000 kwh of each in October, we were at home a lot more (away a lot in Aug/Sept) and had someone staying with us during the daytimes. That's a change from ~£170 to ~£270 using the changing (old and new) figures you quoted anyway. We are very heavy users, a 4 bed house with fairly inefficient heating system, insulation etc so it adds up.

Usage had been creeping up a little from around £120 pm (summer) but Orbit increased the Direct Debit to £240+. Even with our increased usage on the *old* tariff it would have still been within the £177 Direct Debit. We assumed that they had anticipated the usage continuing to rise at a decent rate into winter but couldn't be sure and couldn't contact to find out, until they contacted with the new bill.

Unfortunately not. It was never sent, our online account communications and bills didn't start arriving for ages. We signed up and got running with them in May 2021, but our first communication into email after the "Welcome Communication" and the "Switch Complete Communication" was in mid-September (September bill) almost 4 months after we joined.

It's almost as if they forgot we had joined until that point and suddenly sent it all through because it was then that we finally got a bill for the period May-Sept!
