Newbie
I never use the electric fire because it always smells and makes the room stuffy. Could anyone please suggest how I could make this look nicer and maybe gain some space? I am happy to employ a tradesman0

How much do you want to spend? I'm also in the market for an authentic but inexpensive replacement and have my eye firmly on Gumtree.
I actually bought a marble backplate and hearth clearance from B&Q, I think it cost £30. Am looking for a similar bargain fireplace.No man is worth crawling on this earth.

The smell is probably from a build up of dust on the heating elements. If it can be unplugged, take it outside and give it a real good vacuum. If you have access to an air gun, a good blow should get rid of the remaining dust (just wear a good quality dust mask when doing it).
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
