Ebay not allowing seller to give contact details

Haven’t  used Ebay for years but we advertised a large specialist item and have had a lot of interest.  Naturally some people want to view it to see if it meets their requirements.  Discovered we can’t leave our phone number to give them address etc.

How do people go on who want to view, say, cars which most of us want to view and test before we buy?

Cars are a different scenario altogether as they are sold via classified adverts on ebay which do allow full contact details to be shared, and also allow sellers to ask for cash on collection.

As you have found out ebay have strict policies now about off site sales and by banning contact pre sale can stop some, possibly most of the sales that were started on ebay but then done unofficially face to face avoiding fees. If you attempt to exchange details you will run the risk of being banned. Contact details (except for business sellers) can now only be exchanged after a sale.

depending on your item it might be possible to use classified ads, but the categories are very limited and not much is eligible, other than that a different site, perhaps a specialist forum or such like might be the better option. Due to ebay FVFs it might also be a lot cheaper!
