Inheritance and living abroad

Hi everyone! My mother died back in 2020 and finally the probate will be complete this week. I currently live in the USA and as my mother did not leave a will the house she owned is being split 3 ways between my brother (in Japan) and my sister who lives in UK (where my mother also lived) and myself. Would like some advice on best way for my share of monies (nearly 100,000 pounds) to be transferred to myself in the USA. I still have a UK bank account with Nationwide so was thinking monies could be sent there and transferred over to US bank but needed to know the most tax efficient way? Thanks in advance, Dominic Mills

There is no UK tax due on money inherited. Any IHT due is paid by the estate before Letters of Administration (not probate) are obtained.
Any taxes due under US law will be a local matter and no-one on a UK forum can advise you on that.
The best way to convert sterling to US$ is a separate issue, but the high street banks invariably charge swingeing rates: you'd do much better with a specialist such as Wise (formerly Travelwise), who are well established.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • What you are really looking at is the cheapest safe way of transferring the money, there are no UK tax issues and there should be no US ones either.

Might be best to ask about international money transfer over on the banking board.
