Our house cost £36000 in 2000, and I am so glad we did buy it then, because there is no way we could afford it if we had to buy it again today (I think it's worth £110k-ish). It must be a complete nightmare trying to get on the property ladder at the moment. We live in an area where houses are still reasonably 'cheap' too (if you can call £110k cheap ), so goodness knows how people in more expensive areas manage.
I bought the flat I'm in now for more that 110k snaggs and its only a 1 bedroom + 1 tiny internal boxroom   Edinburgh prices are scary! I bought it 5 years ago (today :rotfl: ) and sooooo couldn't afford it now :eek:Mortgage free as of 12/08/20!

I know, and £36k seemed like an absolute fortune back then as well! We only bought it because I was expecting Ryan and we were living in a horrible flat that had a grotty bathroom, a damp problem and no heating, and it wasn't fit to bring a baby into.
We thought having radiators and being able to have a bath were such luxuries when we first moved in!

I was very lucky when I moved 3 1/2 years ago. There was a lull in the housing market and I got my bungalow for £160k (I had 55k deposit from being bought out by my ex, but stil eeeeeeeek at a £105k mortgage!).
Whilst it was all going through, the housing market had a mad surge and it was worth about £180k by the time I moved in 4 months later - I couldn't have afforded to buy the house by that stage if I wasn't already breathing a sigh of relief to get it for 160k!! It's worth about £220k now, which is eye watering really for a 2 bed 1 reception room place.
