changing supplier to get a SMETS2

I have  secure Smets1 meters, originally installed by OVO. I am now with Octopus. I use the Wiser app and radiator controls, and they are now offering an in-home display which links the app to a smart meter. However my Smets1 is incompatible- it needs to be Smets2.
Although I hardly used the original in-home display, I think the new system being integrated to an app I use frequently, would be helpful.
I'd be happy to stay with Octopus, but they won't change a working meter. Which suppliers  would supply  new Smets2 meters, because they could not use the Secure Smets1 meter?

All smart meter capable suppliers can use your Secure SMETS1.
It's enrolled in the DCC and accessible to every supplier with DCC access, and suppliers without DCC access can't use smart meters at all.

In theory no supplier should agree to change a working meter that has been enrolled with and adopted by the DCC. Changing supplier should no longer make your meters revert to dumb mode.

Download the app BRIGHT and you should get the information that you are seeking provided you are signed up to 30 minute usage.

Have you got a link for the Wiser display?
I am curious to see what about it requires a SMETS2 meter?
I could understand it needing a meter enrolled with the DCC perhaps, but yours probably already is even though it is SMETS1...

  • It is a message that appears in the App, after running the 'check my eligibility' button. Presumably Wiser do a lookup on my address and see what kind of meter is installed. They report that I either don't have a smart meter or it is not SMETS2.
I shall contact their technical support to see why my Smets1 is incompatible.

I am not sure exactly what the additional functionality is (over and above the Octopus reports) but I hope it will  tell me  what heating each room costs in real time by linking the individual radiator temps to the meter consumption.

That is not going to be possible with just the app and a smart meter as you cannot link directly to the meter without your own CAD, such as the one made by Hildebrand, there is no other way to get instantaneous data.
Other methods use the half-hour data available from the DCC for the previous day.
Even with direct access to the meter, unless you are using electricity to heat your radiators you will not get instantaneous consumption information as the gas meter is not designed to provide it since it is battery powered and cannot sustain frequent updates.
Even if it could though, inferring a cost per room based only on the radiator valve setting would be wildly inaccurate.

I've just installed the Bright app and that initially says you need a SMETS2 meter although when you go on to set up the meter it does say it can be SMETS1 enrolled with DCC. Unfortunately my SMETS1 is not yet enrolled :(
