I stayed in a converted old manor house quite near Windermere in February.

From the guestbook there were quite a few honeymooners had stayed there.

    It is called Orton Hall.

    The website is https://www.ortonhall.com

    We hired the Rochester Wing.

The place itself is split down into different wings/cottages and there is a shared area with seats/pool table/grand piano.

Its self catering but there are restaurants in the area and a pub 5 mins up the road.

We spent time walking around Windermere itself and their was an aquarium at the bottom end of the lake.

There are loads of other lakes as well obviously.

This link might help you as well.

I stayed in the lake District in May in a truly beautiful hotel called Linthwaite House. It is on the hill overlooking lake windermere and set in beautiful gardens. I especially loved the high quality of the food and the service. Despite being small and exclusive the atmosphere was fairly relaxed and informal. There was a lot of attention to detail, such as a CD player in the bedrooms and a CD library, fresh milk with the tea and coffee in rooms. I felt totally pampered there. If you do go I would recommend booking the dinner bed and breakfast package as the five course dinners are the best I have had anywhere.

I think it costs from about £140 per night at that time of the year including dinner. I was lucky enogh to win my stay through a postcard entry competition.

I would agree with Prudent and opt for the Linthwaite Hotel especially for a Honeymoon.

You can get rooms with a fantastic view of Lake Windermere. You can order Champagne, Chocolates & Roses to be in your room on arrival.

It is expensive but well worth it
  • I would recommend a stay at the Sharrow Bay Hotel at Ullswater (if you can get in - they book up well in advance). I had a fantastic five course lunch there recently. It was simply superb. The hotel is right on the lakeshore with stunning views.
The other advice I would give you is: take your walking boots! The best way to experience the Lakes it to take to the hills. Wander up Langdale and see the mountains. Simply beautiful.

Windermere makes a good base, but its not the only place in The Lakes and there are far nicer towns. What sort of activities do you wish to do? It can get very busy in the summer (Windermere particularly so) but it's not too hard to escape the crowds if you make the effort to get out of the larger towns. It really depends what you're looking for. My partner and I have been going to The Lakes for several years now, as many times as we can and we're having our Honeymoon there over Christmas and New Year (not much prospect of a tan then). We're more than happy in self catering cottages and spend the day walking. Much of the appeal for us comes from the relaxed atmosphere, ie. being able to sit in the pub drying off in front of a roaring fire and having dinner whilst still in our walking gear and boots.
Coniston, Grasmere and Ambleside are all nice places with plenty of places to eat or there are some more remote hotels on some of the outlying Lakes.

I don't think this is a referral, so I hope I haven't put it in the wrong place. My sister owns a hotel overlooking Bassenthwaite, near to Keswick. They are quite busy through the summer, but would give you a warm welcome.
