Laptop repairs

I bought my son a laptop for college, online directly from a well known computer manufacturers online shop in 2017.
last week, it stopped being able to open and close, which he really needs it to. He took it to a local repairer, who said the lid would need replacing but the part is no longer available. He should contact the seller because under the consumer act? If it is faulty and less that 6 years old, it should be repaired or replaced.
The computer company consistently say that as it is no longer under warranty, he will have to pay £50 shipping (one way) for them to take a look at it, and they will give him a quote on how much the repair will cost.
when I have asked them about our rights under the consumer act, they either refuse to accept they are the retailer (despite having a copy of the receipt), ignore me and refer to the warranty, or in one case told me to talk to the consumer act!

Any advice on what I can do next?
Thank you

As it's over 6 months, you need to commission an independent report saying the fault is a manufacturing defect and isn't down to mis-use - you'll also need to pay for this yourself and reclaim if the report goes in your favour.
Unfortunately your local repairer wasn't quite right in their wording - the CRA isn't a 6 year warranty on everything you buy as they seem to have implied.1 -
Thank you mattyprice. Where would I commission the report from?
The repairer said it was a common fault but I don’t think the seller would acknowledge the report even if it was in our favour.0 -
Statutory minimum warranty is 12 months. Any extension would need to be paid for,
After 4 years. Damage may well be down to wear and tear , and how the laptop has been treated.2 -

Warranties can be any length from 0 to infinity. There is no such thing as statutory warranty., that implies there is legislation setting it.2 -
You can obtain a report from any "expert", perhaps the shop who weren't able to repair might do it for a fee. It is probably pretty unlikely that the lid failing after all this time is actually an inherent fault and not down to wear and tear or misuse though. Remember the retailer are only responsible for the cost of the report if it is found to be inherently faulty.1

The cost of obtaining the report might well exceed the value of a 4 year old laptop...unless you are feeling lucky, I wouldn't pursue this.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

You could take it to a different repair shop and see if they think they might be able to fix it. Sometimes dead laptops are sold on ebay for parts - either you or a repair shop could see if they could source the necessary parts that way.0

When you say it won't open, do you mean the lid is jammed shut and won't move?0
-
Thank you everyone. It is jammed open now. My son has been really careful with it.0

You've never told us what make and model it is, just that it's 'well known'.
If you say what it is we can make practical suggestions for fixing it either here or in Techie Stuff0
