Lines in Carpet

Have had a new Carpet fitted and unfortunately there are lines across the pile on half of it. (Am in negotiations with the retailer)

Am just wondering if there is a simple way of getting these lines out.
I wondered if steam from the iron mighty lift the pile?
(Looks like it might have been end of the roll and there was shrink wrap inside which has caused the marks.)

Don't do anything until you've spoken to the retailer and don't agree to any nonsense of it will come out with wear.
You can agree to leave it to see if he's right but only agree to replacement if his advice doesn't work. And don't leave that too long.
    Yes, pics would help.

Lines across pile immediately after fitting aren't that unusual, its merely a result of the carpet being laid and folded on itself before being wound tight on a roll.

They should go after a couple of weeks of settling, being walked on and vacuuming.

Over and above that I wouldn't try to 'fix' it with steam etc.

I recently had new carpets and was advised before fitting there will be no joins. When it was done he re-verified there were no joins in any of the carpets but I spotted these lines you are talking about. He told me these are quite normal and are called stress lines from stretching and securing the carpet in place. He advised they will fade away over a few weeks. I think they ended up disappearing about 3-4 weeks later, I can't seem them anymore at all.

I'm amazed. Must be a difference in the manufacture these days.
I've had lots of new carpets and never lines. Good to know when I get the next lot done.
I'd still say keep your options open in case this doesn't go away.

They are nothing like you have suggested. Even the fitters said there was something wrong with it and phoned the shop to ask advice.

They suggested I had it fitted (half was done) and after a week to get in touch with the shop as the problem had been registered with management.
Phoned shop today and someone is coming out to take photos.

I took some pics myself but don't know how to put them on here.

  • As a Carpet Fitter for 35 years and with the knees o prove it,I was amazed at how many times I would unroll a carpet in a customers house and see obvious faults.Sometimes where the pile had been trimmed and a line would be clearly visible, the Store gave me the option of pointing the fault out to the customer before fitting and offering a discount or they could wait, usually 2 weeks, for a replacement. The usual response from Manufacturers was,'Easier than quality control'. Also quite often as carpets are rolled tightly prior to dispatch, you may get a crease on the roll end which should just go within a week or two. The main fault with lack of quality control is that the customer may be in the  throes of moving in or having cleared the room etc..It's usually the fitter who bares the brunt of  complaints.

Carpet is 4 x 5 mts and like you said the fitters called me to look when they unrolled it. The lines are on half the carpet and look a bit like floorboard stripes but they go the other way. (They said they would come out!)
There was all this shrink wrap that they said was in the wrapped carpet and caused the marks.

Like you said Gastines3 I have moved bed etc into other bedroom and have stuff everywhere as I decorated room first and intend buying new furniture so have even dismantled wardrobe to clear the room and now am in limbo.
The shop is sending out a photographer so we shall see.

Pretty much the same happened to me - carpet fitters put the carpet down and there was a line running across every few feet.  Fitters said it was to do with how the rolls had been stored.

Spoke to the shop who said to leave it a week, and if the lines were still there they'd sort a replacement.  Sure enough, within a week the lines had gone anyway.
