I once was forced to change my HMRC preference from online to post and then ring them up and ask for a notice of coding (to use as ID evidence).

The HMRC officer asked why and I told him for ID verification and he said he understood and that he would send a letter out straight away.

    Complete nonsense.

Yes, until I got my passport HMRC were (and probably will remain, as I still don't have a driving licence) one of my 'go to's for proof of id, and in my experience are well used to the request (for the record, I seem to recall that you don't even need to ring, you can use their 'webchat' facility ,as all they are doing is sending someone somewhere a coding notice to the address they have on record for them, so ironically it's not something you need to go throguh a lot of security checks for!)
  • I also think the pendulum has swung a bit too far.

Just attempting to open a basic instant access saver with Darlington Building Soc.

I sent them a copy of my photo driving licence, council tax bill and utility bill.

Plus, a cheque with my banking details plus application forms.

All this was returned to me as I had not ticked one of the boxes.

Did as asked and returned everything.

Today had letter saying due to security, I now needed to send a selfie of me holding my driving licence and forward it via a secure website.

I’m all for security but it’s getting a tad over the top me thinks.

I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
    There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.
  • Current "Column 1" as required by Santander as proof of ID - for a new customer they require 1 document from this list, and one from a further list as proof of address. This was as of last week.

    List 1 (Proof of identity)
    Passport – UK/Irish (unexpired and signed)
Passport – non-UK/non-Irish (with valid right to remain***)
Unexpired UK photocard driving licence (the licence and photographmust be in date)
EEA or Switzerland identity card (with valid right to remain***)
Electoral ID Card issued by the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland
    Unexpired Biometric Residence Permit
Unexpired UK old style driving licence(not provisional)
Notification of entitlement to UK Government or Local Authoritypension or benefits*. (If Universal Credit online statement is providedplease include a letter of introduction from DWP case workerconfirming this claim)
    Educational grant/loan/bursary*
    HMRC (HM Revenue & Customs) coding/assessment/statement/taxcredit document*(not P45/P60s)
Blue Badge Disabled Parking Permit (unexpired)

For proof of ID for a Solicitor in England, as a rule if you have no photo ID then two current proofs of address in your name plus sight of a current bank card in your name would be considered plenty good enough. By "Current" on the proof of name/address that should be for example a hard copy household bill inside 3 months old - and there, at this time of year, is where a lot of people struggle - in March, April and May it's easy as pie with council tax and water rates bills appearing.

"Hold your ID next to your face and take a selfie" is the 21st century version of your bank clerk remembering your face and your name, back in the 70s and 80s.

What other alternatives would you suggest banks should use to ensure that a fraudster can't impersonate you and wander off with the contents of your account?
