I posted this on another thread earlier today but am now posting it on a new thread as I believe it is quite important.

NatWest have always said the following regards the direct debit date for their credit cards.

"Direct debit
Minimum payment - payment is claimed 25 calendar days from statement date or shortly afterwards
Full payment - payment is claimed 15 calendar days from statement date or shortly afterwards"

(as in the link below)

https://supportcentre.natwest.com/Searchable/913255502/How-long-does-it-take-to-make-a-payment-to-my-credit-card.htm

Now it appears that they are also saying this.

"If you elect to pay the minimum, minimum payment plus, fixed or full amount with Direct Debit, the money will come out of your account 25 calendar days from the statement date, or shortly afterwards."

(as in the link below - for this you need to click on "Paying with direct debit  +  Scheduling direct debit payments")

https://www.natwest.com/credit-cards/existing-customers.html

Does anyone have experience of the actual date that NatWest use for a direct debit payment of the full balance. IE is is 15 or 25 days from the statement date?

PS. This anomaly also occurs for RBS credit cards.

Comments

  • My statement date is the 18th, they take the payment on or after the 15th.
I've not changed the date since having the CC.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear it in 2026.
  • I have two NatWest credit cards. One, until recently, I paid the minimum. The other I pay the full statement balance every month. Both take the direct debit 25 days after the statement.

This is not as easy as it would appear.

NatWest say that the DD is taken on the due date and also that it is taken 10 days before the due date.

I prefer to set the date myself by arranging a forward dated payment.

Part of the purpose of this thread is to alert people to the fact that NatWest (and RBS) have contradictory messages on their website.

The best advice I ever received was to get "ahead of the game" and set all regular monthly payments to go out before you get paid.

I have an RBS rather than NatWest card, statement date 23rd and DD taken for the full amount around 17th/18th the following month so around 25 days or so.

What does your statement say about when a payment will be taken? (if at all)

The information on the website is somewhat contradictory to say the least and based upon my experience of when payment is taken it's wrong. But this is just some information on a web page, what ultimately matters is what's written on your statement as that is the legal document.

  • My statements are always generated on the 27th of the month

Direct debit has been taken on the 22nd November, 22nd October, 21st September, 23rd August and next payment is due 21st December, make of that what you will

I had not considered that if I set up a DD instruction, I would always have advance notice of the DD date on my statement. I will try this so that I will know for sure.
