Amazon Platinum Card and £40 giftcard

Options
If card is not activated or immediately cancelled will the gift card spend be reversed? Having read the reviews (after being accepted and spent the gift card) I'd be very reluctant to actually use this card. Have a credit card already that is paid off in full by direct debit monthly, I've used it for 20+ years so no need to change or have an additional card. Last week I was making a purchase on Amazon and the £ 40 gift card was very appealing so I went ahead, signed up and used the gift card (already have the item I purchased). I only make a few minimal value purchases a year on Amazon so points wont amount to anything worthwhile.

  • Activating or not won't make a difference, you'll take the credit check hit and it will be added to your file regardless.

If you really don't want it (although that may not be a good idea with the current Amazon vs Visa spat) then I'd just cancel it.  Activation is just to ensure the physical card has ended up in the right hands, it has nothing to do with the account itself which is already set up.

Will the gift card (that I've already spent) be reclaimed though if I cancel the card?
My long term card is MasterCard anyway, I've never had visa.
I'm not concerned about the credit search or short term effect on rating. I'm guessing that cancellation of a never used card will filter back to credit rating after 6 months or so anyway.

It always good to have a back up credit card, incase of lost/freezing of cards. Read the terms and conditions, to see if there are minimum periods. Also just so you know, they set the card as the default payment method, once you apply and are approved.

I did it purely for the £40 Gift card. I used the card for some purchases for a week and then cleared the balance completely. I have now closed the account and spenT the gift card money and they in turned thanked me for being a customer.

One thing I did notice they checked my file and did soft search only. This was about a month ago and to this day no hard search was ever recorded and I have checked all main credit reference agencies again today.
