Simple question about nominal share capital

Options
Hi,
This is a very naïve question - I am researching a historic company which was started with £10,000 nominal share capital.

Does this mean that the company actually had £10,000 of capital or that they simply issued this many shares to the owner without any payment?
Or is it not actually clear from this if either is the case?
Any clues much appreciated, thanks.

It is not clear. The amount of nominal capital is the minimum amount that must be paid per share, but it does not have to be paid up front. It should be obvious from documents filed whether the shares were fully paid up or not. If issued in 1911, it is likely they are fully paid by now.
  • Good to know, thanks very much.
